Google Web Hosting - Can You Hear Me Now?

My prior post on Google Web Hosting drew some comments that made me think not many people are aware that there is such a thing as free google web hosting. It’s a bit surprising, since Google has thrown its hat into the ring, proving many other services, such as Google check out, Blogger, Google scholar, etc along with the google web hosting services.

The advantages really of Google webhosting is that 1) it’s free (we like free here) and 2) it’s fairly easy to use. It puts website creation and ownership in the hands of the general public who may balk at internet usage. As opposed to Blogger, Google’s other free hosting/blogging service, google page creator (the name of the hosting) allows multiple pages to be built instead of a single page, giving the website a true website feel instead of a blog.

There are however disadvantages. The biggest, in my mind, is the inability to use php. Php is a dominant scripting/programming language in the world of web hosts and allows for many things that would be difficult to do just by html. Additionally, you can actually find many scripts already made in case you don’t beans about programming (like me, for example). In my opinion, to be competitive, the Google web host service needs to step it up.

Rumors are also flying around on the internet about Google creating it’s own “googlenet” or google internet. If that does truly happen in the future, they’ll definitely need to upgrade their hosting to the more widely accepted structure.

All in all, google website hosting is a serious contender in the arena of free hosting, google free hosting that is. There are no ads to contend with, no pop-ups, and they’re really pretty easy to use. If they decide to support php, and if they allow the user more choices in editing the html, then they’ll become unstopabble in the webhosting world.

Lastly, Google needs to allow true html editing of the google page creator. As it stands, you can only edit portions of the html page and not the entire page (at least as far as I can tell). This makes it difficult to ad things like stat tracking, etc. Google web hosting is overall a good product, but the user will need to overlook a few of the basics they receive with other web hosts.
